Alternative Investing Drought Confirmed

Professor Glenn A. Okun

Bloomberg reported this morning that Bobby Le Blanc, chief executive officer of Onex Corp., a $50 billion private equity investment firm, confirmed the alternative investment drought first described by the Rabid Capitalist on August 7 (see https://therabidcapitalist.com/2023/08/07/private-equity-drought-the-next-liquidity-squeeze/ and https://therabidcapitalist.com/2023/09/27/alternative-investing-drought-2/ ).  Yesterday, he cited higher interest rates and diminished liquidity as the causes for the worst fundraising environment in memory at the company’s investor day.

Rising borrowing costs, hesitant banks, and concerns of a recession have all weighed on private equity. In addition, some institutional investors have exhausted their ability to engage in illiquid assets after reaching allocation limits during the market decline of the previous year.

  1. Professor Okun,
I subscribed on 9/21 but despite being logged in, the posts show I not a paid subscriber? I previously had access so not sure what’s going on?

    1. WordPress has the following suggestions for your issue:
Check that they’ve signed up to receive email notifications, and at what frequency they’ve set up to receive them.
They can visit https://subscribe.wordpress.com/ to manage their subscriptions (a WordPress.com account is not required), along with their delivery frequency.
It’s possible their email provider has marked your blog post notifications as spam. They can check their spam or junk folder, and then make sure to flag the notification as not spam so future notifications are sent to their inbox.
Ask your other subscribers if they received the email notification of a new blog post. This will let you know if the issue is specific to a single subscriber, or if there’s more you need to investigate. Check for common themes if it’s more than one subscriber. Are they all using the same email provider? Do they show up under followers? Have they confirmed their subscription delivery preferences?

      1. Yes – when I click on the link you provided, it shows as me being a paid subscriber, but when I go to your latest posts (https://therabidcapitalist.com/2023/09/28/going-off-on-the-office-market/ or https://therabidcapitalist.com/2023/09/28/the-consumer-has-been-in-trouble-since-the-second-quarter/) all I see is a message that asks me to subscribe to continue reading.

I even tried accessing these posts from wordpress.com and there, it says I’m currently a free subscriber and to upgrade to paid(which I did on 9/21).

      2. Did you use your email as your id or your wordpress id? Most people use the same id for both.

  2. For your newsletter, I used my email address and my wordpress ID is not my email address. Though I still don’t get how that may be the root cause, I was able to read your premium content beforehand just fine, now I can’t.

    1. You need to contact wordpress if their suggested approaches that I sent to you do not work. My earlier point was that your dual id’s may be an issue that you should raise with Workpress.

      1. Thanks Professor – though it seems like I’m not the only one being affected by this. Refer to this link (https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/subscription-265/#post-3992713) – another user has reported the same issue.
