Buy now, pay later (“BNPL”) services, such as Affirm and Klarna, are encountering adversity on multiple fronts. Its core customer of thirty-five year olds has come under growing financial pressure, and with it poses an increased credit risk to these vendors. The next generation customer, Gen Z or twenty-five year olds, has not developed into an attractive source of growth due to their caution and preference for cash. BNPL may become a slow growth, low margin service stream as a result.
