Earning large management fees is the American way, or, at least, the way of the investment management industry. Passive, or index, investing commands lower fees than active investing. An exciting strategy is required to persuade customers to allow stock picking and higher fees. ESG was the last theme that accomplished this objective for investment managers, including BlackRock. Now, BlackRock, the biggest advocate for ESG investing, wants individuals to invest in private equity.
