Moody’s reported that the U.S. default rate will increase to 5.5 percent in 2026 in its “modestly pessimistic” forecast, and 9.3 percent in its “severely pessimistic” scenario. Private equity-backed firms are much more likely to default than other private companies. Tariffs will exacerbate these liquidity issues.
